Magnitude of Experience

Experience cannot adequately be described by occurrence alone. A single event may be profound. A repeated event may become nearly imperceptible. A short event can produce a long response. A long event can leave little lasting effect.

The proposed magnitude model therefore separates the existence of an experience from characteristics that may influence its lived significance.

The working expression is:

Mₖ = f(rₖ, iₖ, dₖ, sₖ)

where magnitude is treated as a function rather than a predetermined arithmetic rule.

Details

The four provisional dimensions are:

r = repetition
i = intensity
d = duration
s = developmental significance

For a particular event or recurring experience:

Mₖ = f(rₖ, iₖ, dₖ, sₖ)

The notation deliberately leaves f undefined. That is important. At an early stage, several mathematical possibilities can be imagined.

An equal-weight average could be written:

Mₖ = (rₖ + iₖ + dₖ + sₖ) / 4

A multiplicative model could instead be:

Mₖ = rₖiₖdₖsₖ

But those equations make very different claims. In the average model, one high value can partly compensate for another low value. In the product model, a value approaching zero in one category can dramatically reduce the total. Neither relationship should be adopted merely because it produces a convenient number. The appropriate function should eventually follow from the phenomenon being studied and the measurements available.

There is another complication in r. If total magnitude is already calculated across repeated events:

M(total) = Σₖ₌₁ᴷ Mₖ

then the number of events K already contains information about repetition.

Including repetition again inside every Mₖ could count the same feature twice. So r requires a more precise definition. It might eventually describe something other than simple frequency—for example clustering, recurrence density, reinforcement, or another temporal characteristic.

The model therefore presently works best at two levels:

Event level

Mₖ = f(iₖ, dₖ, sₖ, …)

Accumulated level

M(total) = Σₖ₌₁ᴷ Mₖ

with repetition represented partly or entirely through K and the temporal distribution of events.

This is also where measurement becomes important:

  • Intensity might have a subjective rating.

  • Duration can sometimes be measured directly.

  • Developmental significance may require age, developmental stage, context, or established psychological constructs.

  • Physiological response may introduce still other variables.

The point is not to force subjective life into a number. It is to ask which aspects of experience can be distinguished clearly enough to compare subjective report with empirical measurement.

Refraction

Magnitude provides a bridge between the philosophical model and an empirical question. If two people encounter the same stimulus, the external event can be identical while the lived response differs. Likewise, the same person may encounter the same stimulus before and after a change in attention, regulation, perception, or state of consciousness and experience a different magnitude.

That opens the next part of the inquiry. Transcendental Meditation introduces observable changes in processes associated with attention, autonomic activity, brain dynamics, and perception. The next question is therefore not whether a neurological measurement is consciousness. It is more precise:

Can changes in measurable neurological and physiological processes help us understand changes in the magnitude through which an experience is perceived, sustained, and integrated?

That is where this symbolic model begins to meet empirical measurement.
