Successive Expansion and EmergenceWholeness
If Cφ describes one complete relational bit of consciousness, lived experience requires some way of describing succession. For that purpose, n can function as an index:
n = successive experiential iteration
The notation can then distinguish one occurrence from another without changing the underlying structure of the bit. A central question follows:
Does each new experience replace what came before it, or does it somehow include it?
The working model developed here begins from the second possibility.

One way of representing successive inclusion is:
Cₙ ⊂ Cₙ₊₁
This should presently be read conceptually rather than as a fully specified set-theoretical claim. It proposes that the next experiential state contains something of the preceding state, rather than beginning again from zero.
A related expression is:
Cₙ₊₁ = Cₙ + ΔCₙ
where ΔCₙ represents whatever change accompanies the next experience.
This is intentionally broad. ΔCₙ could eventually refer to a shift in information, interpretation, attention, physiology, memory, perceptual framing, or another measurable or phenomenological feature. It has not yet been operationally defined.
The golden ratio entered this exploration as another hypothetical relationship.
φ = (1 + √5) / 2
A proportional-expansion model can be written:
Cₙ₊₁ = φCₙ
and, recursively:
Cₙ = C₀φⁿ
Again, this is an amateur mathematical hypothesis, not an empirical conclusion.
Writing an equation does not establish that consciousness literally increases by approximately ~1.618 from one moment to the next. Instead, the notation asks whether patterns associated with proportional growth, recursive inclusion, or self-similarity might offer a useful model for thinking about successive conscious experience, with the peaceful, traumatic and mundane in mind.
A stronger version found through this experiment combined proportional expansion with experiential change:
Cₙ₊₁ = φCₙ + ΔCₙ
But this introduces two different assumptions simultaneously:
that consciousness undergoes event-specific change, and
that some underlying quantity/quality associated with a state of consciousness expands according to φ.
The first is comparatively modest. The second requires considerably more justification. For that reason, the simpler expression:
Cₙ₊₁ = Cₙ + ΔCₙ
remains useful even if the φ hypothesis is later revised.
There is also a related philosophical idea:
Oᴿₙ → Oᴰₙ₊₁
That which was observer can subsequently become observed. The next state can therefore include not only new external content but also awareness of an earlier observer, earlier thought, earlier action, or earlier identity.
Successive experience becomes recursive.
Refraction
Expansion alone is not necessarily growth in clarity. A new state can contain useful information, sensory information, memory, interpretation—and information supplied by someone else. If an external observer, a role of authority, or a person acting as the perceived parameter of reality declares a paradigm binding on the person who is observing, that statement can itself become something observed.
The model therefore needs to distinguish:
the one who observes
from
what another observer says that person (one who observes) is.
That is where the abstract model becomes a thought experiment about identity.
