Vedic literature,preceding Abrahamic scriptures, elucidates the dynamic, interactive relationship that is required and responsible for the manifest, or material , universe. The components of this trinity are known by their Sanskrit names as Rishi, Devata and Chhandas.

Nader’s description of consciousness as the unified relationship of observer, process of observing, and observed, uses this compact symbolic form:

Cφ = (Oᴿ, Oᴳ, Oᴰ)

Here, Cφ represents a bit of consciousness: not a fragment separated from consciousness as a whole, but a way of isolating one complete occurrence for examination. Oᴿ is the observer, Oᴳ is the process of observing, and Oᴰ is that which is observed.

The usefulness of the equation is not that consciousness has suddenly become measurable because it has been placed in mathematical notation. The usefulness is that notation lets the relationships remain visible while the thought becomes more complex.

Details

The subscript φ belongs to the original definition of the bit:

Cφ = (Oᴿ, Oᴳ, Oᴰ)

φ should not initially be replaced by n. At this stage, φ is part of the proposed form of the bit itself. The later variable n enters only when multiple occurrences of consciousness are placed into succession.

The parentheses are also intentional. Writing:

Cφ = OᴿOᴳOᴰ

could conventionally imply mathematical multiplication. That is not necessarily what is intended here. The triple/triad/tuple:

Cφ = (Oᴿ, Oᴳ, Oᴰ)

instead says that these three roles are being considered together as one relational event. This permits a distinction without demanding separation. The observer can be identified; the process of observing can be identified; the observed can be identified. Yet the bit of consciousness exists through the relationship of these three roles.

This also leaves room for an important shift: something functioning as observer (Oᴿ) in one relation may later become observed (Oᴰ) in another. In shorthand:

Oᴿ → Oᴰ

Self-observation is one familiar example. The one who was previously looking may become that which is looked at. That recursive possibility is what begins to move the model beyond a single bit.

Refraction

A single bit can be conceptually isolated, but lived experience does not remain still. One observation gives way to another, and a remembered observation may participate in the next. The observer may become observed. New information can be incorporated without necessarily erasing what preceded it. The next question is:

What happens when bits of consciousness occur successively?

That introduces a new symbol into the model:
