When the body encounters psychological trauma—whether sudden or ongoing—it responds not only emotionally, but biologically. One of the clearest biological signatures of trauma is oxidative stress: an imbalance between free radicals (highly reactive molecules) and antioxidants (the body’s natural defense system). Over time, this imbalance can cause damage to DNA, proteins, and cells, setting the stage for inflammation and chronic illness.
Understanding how oxidative stress links trauma, health, and healing gives us a lens into why certain groups bear heavier health burdens and how resilience can be cultivated. Oxidative stress is a well-documented biological response to psychological trauma, often marked by inflammation, DNA damage, and impaired cellular function.

Trauma and Oxidative Stress
Research shows that trauma activates redox mechanisms—the chemical processes balancing oxidation and reduction in cells. When this balance tips, oxidative stress contributes to neurodegeneration (the breakdown of brain cells) and long-term inflammation, detailed by Karanikas’ overview of these mechanisms activated under trauma, highlighting how they contribute to neurodegeneration and chronic inflammation—especially relevant in populations experiencing repeated psychosocial stressors (Karanikas, 2021).
Further, low psychological resilience—common in older and systemically marginalized groups—has been associated with elevated oxidative stress and inflammation, amplifying chronic disease burdens (Majnarić et al., 2021).
In health disparities research, psychosocial stress is seen to directly elevate oxidative markers, particularly among racially and economically marginalized groups (Djuric et al., 2008).

Psychosocial stress—such as racism, poverty, or displacement—directly elevates oxidative markers in the body (Djuric et al., 2008). Trauma, then, is not only personal but also collective. Colonization, forced migration, and systemic exclusion can leave intergenerational imprints, even at the cellular level. Evidence shows oxidative stress may accelerate telomere shortening, a marker of aging and poor mental health (Gouni & Verny, 2023).
Trauma in Relationships
Trauma is not confined to the mind; it alters how people move, hold themselves, and relate to others. Ogden (2021) notes that posture, breath, and autonomic responses shift under relational stress, often blocking healing in intimate and social connections.
Refraction
Healing requires more than treating symptoms—it requires approaches that honor cultural, relational, and biological dimensions of trauma.
Cultural Competence: Bryant-Davis (2019) emphasizes that standardized PTSD treatments often overlook identity and lived experience. Healing must be community-based, spiritually integrated, and culturally affirming.
Biological Interventions: Exercise has been shown to reduce oxidative stress and strengthen immune resilience (Stults-Kolehmainen & Sinha, 2014). Nutrition, particularly foods rich in antioxidants like carotenoids, can buffer cellular damage (Bohn, 2019).
Systemic Approaches: For students from marginalized backgrounds, reducing cognitive overload—what Verschelden (2024) calls “bandwidth recovery”—may restore learning and relational capacity after trauma.
Trauma is not only what happens to us; it is what reverberates through our bodies, our communities, and across generations. The science of oxidative stress gives us one language for this process. The science of resilience, culture, and community offers us pathways back to healing.
